Osteopathy promotes healthy movement
At Rebalance Osteopathy our initial clinical focus with a patient invariably revolves around the reduction of painful symptoms experienced by the patient. As pain is usually the reason patients seek our help in the first place.
However, Osteopath’s look at more than just the obvious outward symptoms (such as pain!) of a dysfunction … our aim is to identify the root cause – and any contributing factors which caused the body to ‘breakdown’ at that particular time.
In many cases this can often be traced back to movement – either a reduced or a complete lack of movement in a certain joint or part of the body, or a faulty, imbalanced movement pattern.
So what’s this got to do with golf?
Basically, your golf swing is a complex, co-ordinated series of movements. And the golf swing, even at it’s most elegant and powerful, is also a fairly unusual sequence of movements too!
So, if your body isn’t moving correctly then it may be stoppping your swing becoming as consistent, efficient and powerful as it can be. It may even cause an injury through an inefficent golf swing.

This is the fundamental concept taught in the Titleist Performance Institute’s Level 1 certification programme. They define it as:

However, this does not mean that the aim is for every golfer to end up with the same ‘ideal’ range of movement and golf swing, as efficiency is unique to their body.
Too much movement? A golf swing also requires both stability and control
Too much movement in part of the body can be as detrimental to the golf swing as a lack of it.
TPI philosophy simplifies our complex series of joints and motion segments down to a MOBILITY/STABILITY alternating pattern.
As first noted by Mike Boyle and Gray Cook.
“The body works in an alternating pattern of stable segments connected by mobile joints. If this pattern is altered – dysfunction and compensation will occur.”
So if an area of ‘Stability‘ is weak and not able to provide that stability during the swing; e.g. we have a weak core, then the swing may be detrimentally affected.
Conversely, if an area of ‘Mobility‘ has a restricted range of movement; e.g. a stiff upper back, then again the swing may be detrimentally affected.
But the first step is ALWAYS to screen the golfer, to ascertain what key movements related to the golf swing the client/patient cannot achieve satisfactorily – and what might be done to address that improper range of movement or faulty, imbalanced movement pattern.
